The 80th Independence Day is being celebrated with national fervour all through the State. Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay hoisted the tricolour National Flag at the ramparts of the 382 year old Fort St George after becoming the Chief Minister of the State for the first time.

In his maiden speech on Independence day , he assured the people that his Government would have a zero tolerance attitude towards Corruption. The Chief Minister vowed that the State had a target of reaching a 1.5 trillion dollar economy in 2036. He said that as a representative of the 8 crore people living in Tamil Nadu, he had accountability to maintain social equality, social justice and a society with no discrimination but providing for all. He said that the State Government had a cooperative approach towards the Centre to implement schemes which are beneficial to the people of the State. He said that his Government would assert the rights of the State in the best way possible.

The Chief Minister said that the Government would raise the assistance for the wedding of two daughters of Ex Servicemen from Rs. 25 thousand to Rs. 50 thousand. He also said that the pension for the freedom fighters would be raised to Rs. 23 thousand. and the family pension would be raised to Rs.12 thousand 500. He also gave away awards to those who worked for the welfare of the Society. The Chief Minister also greeted the people gathered on both sides of the Road and walked to a limited distance to greet them.
