In Switzerland, voters will decide today whether to enshrine a stricter form of neutrality in the constitution that would limit the country’s ability to impose economic sanctions and cooperate with the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation (NATO).

The referendum, backed by the right-wing Swiss People’s Party, seeks to bar Switzerland from joining or cooperating with military alliances unless attacked and from imposing sanctions without United Nations approval.

The proposal argues that Switzerland’s neutrality has kept it out of wars and allows it to act as a mediator.

The Swiss government and most political parties oppose the measure, saying it could weaken national security and restrict military cooperation with NATO. Opinion polls indicate the proposal faces opposition, with a recent survey showing 68 percentage against and 31 percent in favor.
