Supreme Court took suo motu cognisance of the alleged gang rape of a minor in a moving bus in the Delhi-NCR region, observing that such cases underline a systematic failure on the part of law enforcement authorities.
A bench comprising Justice J. B. Pardiwala and Justice K. Vinod Chandran observed that public spaces, including parks and buses, cannot be allowed to turn into high-risk zones because of inadequate lighting, poor surveillance and the lack of other essential administrative facilities.
Last month, a 16-year-old girl who boarded a sleeper bus in Greater Noida was allegedly gang-raped by its conductor and driver and abandoned near Kashmere Gate in Delhi. The two accused have been arrested.
