Union Home Minister Amit Shah has said that the Sashastra Seema Bal, SSB is playing a highly commendable role in humanitarian aid and rescue operations during the Nepal tragedy. In his written message on the investiture ceremony of SSB, Mr Shah said, in times of crisis, the swift, coordinated, and sensitive action taken by the SSB serves as a living embodiment of its motto: ‘Service, Security, and Brotherhood’.
He said, every SSB Jawan deployed at the borders is a vigilant guardian of the nation, a first responder during disasters and an ambassador of India’s goodwill. Attending the ceremony, Home Secretary Govind Mohan said, securing country’s borders is a crucial and sensitive objective for the Home Ministry and the Government of India. He said, robust and continuous vigilance and security along the 15 thousand kilometers border is the committment of the Ministry.
Mr Mohan said, a few days ago, the Home Ministry has envisaged a four-pronged strategy to secure India’s borders. He said, the four key pillars of this system are the border guarding forces, the state government personnel deployed at the borders, Central Government Agencies and local citizens. The Home Secretary said, Sashastra Seema Bal SSB will be an important stakeholder in this strategy.
Director General of SSB Sanjay Singhal said, officers and Jawans of the force are taking continuous and effective action against narcotics, weapons, counterfeit currency, human trafficking, illegal immigration, and other forms of organized crimes. He said, SSB personnels are also making significant contributions to internal security, in the fight against Left-Wing Extremism, handling election duties, law and order and disaster management.
He said, the security of Indo-Nepal and Indo-Bhutan borders is the responsibility of SSB. Mr Singhal said, evaryday over 46 thousand vehicles and over 3.25 lakh people cross the Indo-Nepal border and eight thousand vehicles and 50 thousand people cross the Indo-Bhutan borders. 18 personnel of the SSB were presented medals for gallantry and five personnels were presented medals for distringuished service. The Home Secretary also inaugurated housing projects of the SSB.
