Sri Lanka ranked 67th in Global Peace Index and second in South Asia

Sri Lanka has climbed 14 places to rank 67th in the 2026 Global Peace Index (GPI), securing the second position in South Asia and marking one of the most significant improvements in the region.
The ranking reflects the country’s continued recovery after nearly three decades of civil conflict, which ended in 2009, and follows efforts to strengthen political stability, public security and social cohesion. Sri Lanka’s improved standing also comes as the country works to rebuild confidence and economic resilience following the 2022 financial crisis and subsequent political unrest.
The latest ranking highlights Sri Lanka’s progress at a time when global peacefulness continues to decline. The report notes that more countries experienced deteriorating peace conditions over the past year than improvements.
The Global Peace Index is the world’s leading measure of peacefulness, assessing 163 countries and territories using indicators covering societal safety and security, ongoing conflict, and militarisation.
