The death toll from the fire at an elderly care home in Horana, near Colombo, has risen to 13. Police said one more victim succumbed to injuries while undergoing treatment at Horana Hospital. Six others continue to receive medical care at the hospital. The fire broke out at the facility housing nearly 70 elderly residents. Emergency responders rescued 51 occupants, while firefighters managed to bring the blaze under control.

Meanwhile, authorities have arrested the director of the elderly care home in connection with the incident. The director was produced before the Horana Magistrate’s Court and has been remanded in custody until June 11. Investigations into the cause of the fire are underway.
