Union Minister of Youth Affairs & Sports Mansukh Mandaviya participated in the 76th edition of the Fit India – Sundays on Cycle organised in Shillong today.
Flagged off from the premises of the State Central Library here, the event aimed at promoting fitness and healthy lifestyles by bringing together youth, athletes, fitness enthusiasts, and citizens through cycling.
Addressing the participants, the Union Minister said that the Sundays on Cycle event has grown into a nationwide movement, with lakhs of people across the country participating every Sunday in support of the Prime Minister’s Fit India Movement. He noted that cycling events were organised at more than 6,000 locations across India.
He described cycling as one of the best forms of exercise and highlighted its multiple benefits, including promoting fitness, reducing pollution, conserving fuel, and easing traffic congestion.
Referring to the current situation in West Asia and the call to reduce fuel consumption, he said that adopting cycling for short distances and daily commuting can contribute to national efforts towards energy conservation.
Speaking on the occasion, Minister of State for Youth Affairs and Sports, Raksha Khadse, said that the campaign in Shillong witnessed enthusiastic participation from public representatives, athletes, and cycling enthusiasts.
She noted that cycling is steadily gaining popularity in Shillong and described it as an effective solution for fitness and environmental well-being.
