A six-day annual rejuvenation camp for elephants has started today in the Supkhar range of Kanha Tiger Reserve in Mandla, Madhya Pradesh. The camp will continue till September 20.

 

During the camp the elephants will get rest from their routine work, along with bathing, body and foot massage, nutritious food and time for social activities. Wildlife veterinarians will check their health and blood, stool and urine samples will be sent to laboratories for testing. The elephants will also be measured during the camp.

 

Kanha currently has 16 elephants including nine males, six females and one newborn calf. They are used for important wildlife conservation activities including patrolling, monitoring, translocation and special patrolling during the monsoon. The camp will also include training for mahouts and elephant keepers. Senior mahouts will train them in elephant care and handling, including how to manage the animals during emergencies.
