Benchmark domestic equity indices slumped over 1.6 percent today. The Sensex tanked 1, 248 points to close at 73, 581 while the Nifty plunged 384 points to settle at 23,063.
In the broader market at the National Stock Exchange, the Midcap 100 index shed 2.3 per cent, while the Smallcap 100 index lost over 1.5%.
This morning, Markets opened with a gap-down as spike in bond yields, elevated crude oil prices and a sell-off in banking and insurance stocks weighed on the indices. The Sensex and Nifty remained under pressure throughout the session, with sell-off intensifying during the second half of the trade.
In the Sensex pack, 29 out of 30 companies logged losses with NTPC remaining unchanged. Among the top under performers, Bajaj Finance lost 5.5%, Axis Bank declined 4.7 per cent and Bajaj Finserv fell 4.1 per cent.
In the sectoral indices on the BSE, all 28 sectors edged downward. Among the top losers, Mid-Small Private Banks declined 2.8 per cent, Housing Finance lost 2.6 per cent and Financial Services shed more than 2.3 per cent.
The overall market breadth at the BSE was negative, as shares of 2,884 companies declined, 1,473 advanced and 216 remained unchanged.
