The BSE Sensex dropped 142 points to close at 75 thousand 868. The NSE Nifty ended on a flat note, marginally down by seven points to settle at 23 thousand and 907 after a choppy trade today. Benchmark domestic equity indices drifted lower after rising in early trade, as investors remained cautious due to geopolitical uncertainties.
However, the broader market at the National Stock Exchange extended upward trend. The Midcap 100 index advanced over 0.4 per cent, while Smallcap 100 index rose over 0.1 per cent.
In the Sensex pack, shares of 20 out of 30 companies registered gains. Among the top performers, PowerGrid jumped nearly 2.6 per cent, Eternal climbed over two and a half per cent and NTPC advanced over 2.1 per cent. In contrast, HDFC Bank shed more than 2.6 per cent, Infosys dropped 0.7 per cent, and ITC lost 0.6 per cent.
In the sectoral indices at the BSE, 16 out of 25 sectors ended in positive territory. In the top gainers, power surged almost 3.3 per cent, capital goods soared 3.2 per cent, and utilities rose 2.4 per cent. Conversely, top 10 banks plunged 0.9 per cent, private banks shed over 0.8 per cent, and financial services fell over 0.6 per cent.
The overall market breadth at the BSE was positive, as shares of 2 thousand 275 companies advanced, 1 thousand 945 declined, and 174 remained unchanged.
