Sensex and Nifty ends flat in trading session

India’s equity benchmark indices, Sensex and Nifty, ended flat in the range-bound trading session today. The sensex ended in negative territory while the Nifty closed marginally higher.

 

At the closing bell, the Sensex, which is a pack of 30 companies, was down four points, or 0.01 percent, at 82,555. The NSE Nifty settled flat, just a point up at 25,280. In the NSE, 145 companies hit their 52-week high, and 28 hit their 52-week low.

 

In the broader market at the BSE, the mid-cap index gained 0.2 percent and the small-cap index rose 0.5 percent. In the Sensex index, 13 out of 30 companies registered gains. The top gainers today were ICICI Bank, which gained more than one and a half percent, Bajaj Financial Services, which increased more than one percent, and Titan, which added more than half a percent.

 

Conversely, the major laggards were Infosys and Bajaj Finance lost more than one percent, Adani Ports, JSW Steel, HCL Tech, and NTPC shed nearly one percent, and Bharti Airtel and IndusInd Bank declined 0.83 percent each. In sectoral Indices at the BSE, 11 out of 20 sectors traded in losses.

 

The top laggards were: utilities lost 0.77 percent, oil & gas shed 0.69 percent, and metal was 0.59 percent down. The top gainers today were consumer durables,  which got an up tick of 1.27 percent; financial services gained 0.68 percent; and capital goods added 0.62 percent. The overall market breadth at the BSE was positive, as out of 4,054 companies, shares of 1,999 companies advanced, 1,938 declined, and 117 remain unchanged.
