Benchmark domestic equity indices rebounded today, snapping a four-session losing streak. The Sensex climbed 363 points or half a per cent to close at 76,515, while the Nifty added 24 points or 0.1 per cent to settle at 23,898. However, in the broader market at the National Stock Exchange, the Midcap 100 index fell 0.2 per cent, while the Nifty Smallcap 100 index gained 0.2 per cent.
Earlier, the markets opened with a gap-up amid positive global cues. Both benchmark indices remained in the green throughout the session, trading within a narrow range. However, following the closing auction session, the indices pared some of their gains.
In the Sensex pack, 20 out of 30 companies logged gains. Among the top movers, Tata Steel jumped 2.9 per cent, Reliance gained 1.6 per cent and Bajaj Finance advanced one and a half per cent. In contrast, Bharti Airtel as well as HCL Tech declined 1.2 per cent, Eternal dropped 1.1 per cent and Asian Paints lost half a per cent.
In the sectoral indices on the BSE, 16 out of 28 sectors edged upward. Among the top performers, Housing Finance, Metal, Telecommunication and Insurance rose 1.4 per cent, Commodities and Financial Services gained 0.6 per cent and Private Banks Index added half a per cent. In contrast, Realty and Capital Goods declined 0.7 per cent, Healthcare fell half a per cent and Hospitals lost 0.4 per cent.
The overall market breadth at the BSE was positive, as shares of 2388 companies advanced, 1991 declined and 239 remained unchanged.
