Sekhon IAF Marathon held in various cities across the country

The Indian Air Force today organised the second edition of the Sekhon Indian Air Force Marathon in various cities across the country. The cities include Delhi, Mumbai, Chandigarh, Gwalior, Bengaluru, Guwahati, and Jodhpur. Indian Air Force Chief, Air Chief Marshal AP Singh, flagged off the run at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium in New Delhi.

Talking to media, Air Vice Marshal Shekhar Yadav said the marathon is organised in memory of Flying Officer Nirmal Jit Singh Sekhon, the only recipient of the Param Vir Chakra from the Indian Air Force. He added that Flying Officer Nirmal Jit Singh Sekhon displayed exceptional courage during the 1971 India-Pakistan War.

The marathon was held in three categories of 21 kilometres, 10 kilometres and 5 kilometres. The event celebrates the speed, endurance and supersonic spirit of the Air Warriors, while inspiring citizens to push their limits and run for national unity.

Flying Officer Nirmal Jit Singh Sekhon displayed exceptional courage during the 1971 India-Pakistan War. While defending the Srinagar airfield, he single-handedly engaged six Pakistani Sabre jets in his Folland Gnat. His extraordinary bravery, exemplary leadership and complete disregard for personal safety continue to remain an enduring part of the highest traditions of the Indian Air Force.
