Security has been strengthened across Tripura ahead of Independence Day. Speaking at a press conference in Agartala today, Inspector General of Police Monchak Ippar said security arrangements for the celebrations have been given top priority. BSF, police and Tripura State Rifles personnel have intensified patrolling along the state’s borders and have been directed to remain vigilant. Mr Ippar said that ahead of Independence Day last year, members of the TNF militant outfit had attempted to spread extremist activities in the state.
Mr Ippar said police vigilance led to the apprehension of seven to eight militants and the recovery of grenades and other weapons. He said all arrangements have been completed for the main Independence Day function at Assam Rifles Ground in Agartala, with security personnel remaining alert even after the event. Mr Ippar also announced a special crackdown on drug trafficking. Surveillance will be intensified in areas including Battala, Motor Stand, Nagerjala and Radhanagar, with efforts underway to apprehend drug dealers.
