Union Minister for Science and Technology Dr Jitendra Singh today said science and technology have emerged as key drivers of India’s development journey over the past 12 years, transforming from a niche sector into a central pillar of governance, innovation and public welfare.
Addressing a press conference in New Delhi on the theme of 12 Years of Science in Service of India, the Minister said the government’s focus on science-led development has enabled technology to become an integral part of major national missions and flagship programmes. He said the sector has witnessed a shift towards greater industry participation, innovation and public-private collaboration.
The Minister also highlighted the growth of India’s biotechnology sector and said the country’s bio economy has witnessed significant expansion over the past decade.
The Minister said scientific institutions have delivered several globally recognised success stories in recent years. He cited advancements in biotechnology, gene and cell therapies, the Purple Revolution in Jammu and Kashmir, hydrogen fuel cell technology and improved weather forecasting systems as examples of science transla ting into tangible benefits for citizens.
Dr Singh has further highlighted reforms in the space, geospatial and nuclear sectors, saying these measures have expanded private sector participation and strengthened India’s scientific ecosystem. He said country has emerged as a leading global player in science and technology through a combination of policy reforms, innovation and institutional support.
