SC to intervene if protests and security restrictions in New Delhi adversely affect businesses

The Supreme Court today said it will intervene if frequent protests and security restrictions around Connaught Place in New Delhi adversely affect businesses. A Bench comprising Chief Justice of India Surya Kant and Justice Joymalya Bagchi was hearing a plea challenging the New Delhi Municipal Council’s decision to close Central Park for two days ahead of a protest called by the Cockroach Janta Party.

Representing traders, the advocate told the Apex Court that the protests were causing significant business losses. The lawyer argued that the restrictions were disproportionate, particularly ahead of the festive season, including Karva Chauth, Dussehra, Diwali and Chhath.

Chief Justice Surya Kant acknowledged the difficulties faced by small shopkeepers, hawkers and stall owners, observing that their livelihoods and families were being affected. The Bench said it would exercise its constitutional powers, including those under public law, if the restrictions unlawfully affected businesses.
