The Supreme Court today asked the Central Board of Secondary Education , CBSE to consider deferring its mandatory three-language policy for Class 6 students to the 2027 academic session to ease the transition for students. A bench comprising Chief Justice Surya Kant, Justice Joymalya Bagchi, and Justice V. Mohana suggested the delay to comfort students, adding that those currently in Class 6 who wish to study three languages this year should still be allowed to do so.
The policy, aligned with the National Education Policy 2020, requires students to study three languages, at least two of which must be native Indian languages. Under the CBSE circular, foreign languages can only be taken as a third or fourth subject.
