Satwik-Chirag enter BWF World Championships quarterfinals

In badminton, the fifth-seeded Indian pair of Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty defeated Junaidi Arif and Roy King Yap of Malaysia in the pre-quarterfinals men’s doubles match at the BWF World Championships 2026 in New Delhi. The Indian pair had lost the first game 21-23 but bounced back to win the second and third games 21-19, 21-17 in a close encounter. The duo will now face third seeds Liang Wei Keng and Wang Chang of China in the quarterfinals.
 
Earlier in the day, India’s women’s doubles duo of Treesa Jolly and Gayatri Gopichand stormed into the quarterfinals of the World Championships. The Indian pair produced a commanding performance to defeat seventh seeds Rin Iwanaga and Kie Nakanishi of Japan in straight games, 21-16, 21-12. They will now face fourth seeds Jia Yi Fan and Zhang Shu Xian of China in the quarterfinal.
 
Meanwhile, former World champion P V Sindhu lost to third seed Wang Zhi Yi in the women’s singles pre-quarter-final match. Sindhu had lost the first game 11-21 but clawed back in the second game 21-15. However, she lost in the third game 17-21 in a closely contested match.
 
Indian prodigy Ayush Shetty also lost to Indonesia’s Alwi Farhan in men’s singles round of 16. The Indian shuttler lost the match 19-21, 11-21. Meanwhile, the Indian mixed doubles pair of Dhruv Kapila and Tanisha Crasto also lost to China’s Guo Xin Wa and Chen Fang Hui 16-21, 5-21.
