Former Deputy Chief Minister of Punjab and President of Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD), Sukhbir Singh Badal was attacked in Maharashtra’s Nanded this afternoon. Mr. Badal and his wife Harsimrat Kaur were climbing down the steps of Gurudwara Mata Sahib Devaan Ji Mugat when a man tried to stab the SAD chief. Mr Badal was rushed to a hospital where he received stitches on his right hand and is out of danger. Nanded Superintendent of Police Dr. Nilabh Rohan stated that the attacker, who was a Sevadar in the Gurudwara, has been taken into custody.
Maharashtra police personnel who was part of Mr Badal’s special protection unit, was injured in the incident while trying to protect him. Mr Badal along with wife had visited the Takht Sri Hazur Sahib in Nanded.
Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has ordered a probe into the attack on Shiromani Akali Dal President. This is the second attack on him in the last two-years.

Earlier in December, 2024, an assassination attempt was made on him at the entrance of the Golden Temple in Amritsar when he was serving penance given by the Akal Takhat.
Shiromani Gurudwara Prabandhak Committee (SGPC) President Advocate Harjinder Singh Dhami has condemned the attack on Mr. Badal. He said, attack is not only an expression of anti-Panth mentality, but also a direct insult to the dignity of the Guru Ghar and to Sikh faith.
SAD Spokesman, Dr. Daljeet Cheema has termed the attack a deep-rooted conspiracy. Punjab BJP President, Kewal Singh Dhillon and Senior BJP Leader, Ravneet Singh Bittu have also condemned the attack.
