In Odisha, the annual Niladri Bije, the concluding ritual of the world-famous Rath Yatra, is being observed at the Shree Jagannath Temple in Puri today. The sacred ceremony marks the ceremonial return of Lord Jagannath, Lord Balabhadra and Devi Subhadra to the Ratna Singhasana inside the sanctum sanctorum. Millions of devotees have gathered in Puri to witness the divine homecoming, marking the grand finale of the Rath Yatra festivities.
Amidst elaborate Vedic rites, Lord Jagannath, Lord Balabhadra and Devi Subhadra were ceremonially escorted from their chariots into the sanctum to reoccupy the sacred ‘Ratna Singhasana’. The ritual assumes profound spiritual significance as it represents the Lord’s triumphant return to His eternal abode after mingling with millions of devotees beyond the temple precincts. A defining moment of the ceremony is Lord Jagannath’s offering of the sacred Rasagola to Goddess Lakshmi. According to temple tradition, Goddess Lakshmi, displeased that the Lord had departed for the Rath Yatra without taking Her along, initially refuses Him entry into the temple. The offering of Rasagola serves as a gesture of appeasement and reconciliation, after which the Goddess opens the temple doors, symbolising forgiveness, the restoration of harmony, and the triumph of divine love and compassion. With Niladri Bije, the sacred journey of Rath Yatra reaches its ceremonial conclusion, reaffirming the timeless ideals of devotion, forgiveness, unity and universal benevolence.
