In Punjab, the situation at the Lovely Professional University (LPU) at Phagwara has been brought under control by the state police after almost 24-hours, late last night and traffic is running smooth now after the highway was cleared from the protesting students.

 

The students were protesting against the alleged inaction by LPU authorities regarding the alleged rape of a female student on the university premises a few days ago. They vandalized the university campus, pelted stones at police personnel and damaged and torched police vehicles as well. However, the situation was brought under control later.

 

Director General of Police, Gaurav Yadav, who visited the campus to assess the ground situation, told media that whoever is found involved or has instigated violence, even if from the university administration, will be dealt with according to the law. He said police are working as a bridge between students and the university administration to resolve the situation.

 

Meanwhile, the university had described the alleged rape allegations as rumors and, as precautionary measures, the closed for 10-days from today. It has also postponed mid-term examinations until further notice.

 

The DGP has advised all not to believe in or spread rumors rather take the information from authentic sources.
