Puducherry is observing De Jure Transfer Day today, marking the memory of the integration of the union territory to India. Puducherry Home Minister A. Namassivayam hoisted the national flag at Keezhur, where the historic referendum on the merger with India was held in 1954.

 

In the referendum held on October 18, 1954, 170 representatives voted in favour of joining India, while eight voted against. Following the completion of legal procedures, Puducherry’s merger with India received legal recognition on August 16, 1962.
