Union Power Minister Manohar Lal Khattar has said that energy is crucial for economic growth, social progress and human development.
Addressing the 11th BRICS Energy Ministers’ Meeting in Gurugram, Mr Khattar said affordable, reliable and sustainable energy is essential for achieving development goals and the Sustainable Development Goals. He said India is rapidly expanding its renewable energy capacity, smart grid infrastructure and energy storage systems to build a future-ready power sector. The Minister added that India has emerged as one of the world’s leading countries in solar and wind energy deployment and is undertaking large-scale reforms to modernise its power sector.
Mr Khattar also stressed that global climate challenges often have a disproportionate impact on developing nations, despite their limited contribution to the causes of these challenges.
The BRICS Energy Ministers’ Meeting will continue till tomorrow. Discussions are focusing on strengthening cooperation in areas such as energy security and sustainability, energy access and equity, and innovation.
