Poland has pledged to strengthen security along its border with Ukraine following a wave of Russian drone strikes near the frontier, including two incidents reported just kilometres from Polish territory. Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk warned that Russia could intensify its military campaign against areas close to NATO’s eastern borders. Speaking after a security briefing in Warsaw yesterday, Prime Minister Tusk said the coming weeks and months could see a significant escalation and that Poland could not rule out the conflict affecting its territory. He said he would consult NATO allies on a possible joint response.

 

Polish Defence Minister Wladyslaw Kosiniak-Kamysz today in a social media post shared that the Polish military had recovered a Russian military drone from the Baltic Sea near the coastal village of Jaroslawiec. Foreign Minister Radoslaw Sikorski, meanwhile. highlighted NATO’s military capabilities, saying European NATO air forces could inflict significant damage on Russian infrastructure even without US involvement.

 

The latest warnings came after a strike on a train near the Ukraine-Poland border and another attack near a separate border crossing. The train strike occurred shortly after a diplomatic delegation, including former British Prime Minister Boris Johnson and former Swedish Prime Minister Carl Bildt, had passed through the same station.

 

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said Russian forces would continue operations across Ukraine. He also said India and China could play a role in efforts to resolve the conflict, noting that Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chinese President Xi Jinping had expressed willingness to help broker a settlement in recent talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin.
