PM Modi’s Vision of Jan Seva and Sushasan Drives GeM’s Growth and Expands Digital Public Procurement

Prime Minister Narendra Modi is completing 25 years in public service, a journey defined by the mantra of Jan Seva Se Desh Seva, and a relentless commitment that continues. Guided by this vision for Seva and Sushasan, the Government has been ceaselessly working towards achieving the goal of a Viksit Bharat by 2047. Through inclusive development and social empowerment, this dedication is transforming lives. Today, in our special series, we bring you an instance of how this vision has been translated into action through the Government e-Marketplace, GeM.

The Government e-Marketplace, GeM, launched in August 2016, has emerged as a major digital platform for public procurement in the country. The platform brings together buyers and sellers on a common online marketplace. Addressing a post-budget webinar on Ease of living using technology in 2023, Prime Minister Narendra Modi highlighted how the GeM portal has empowered small business owners and street vendors to participate in government procurement.

Talking to Akashvani News, CEO of GeM, Mihir Kumar, said that the business of GeM has grown from 422 crore rupees in 2016-17 to over twenty lakh crore rupees now.

The sellers on GeM platform have grown from around three thousand to over 25 lakh. With its growing participation from Micro and Small Enterprises, women entrepreneurs, startups and other sellers, GeM is continuing to expand the reach of digital public procurement across the country.
