Prime Minister Narendra Modi paid tribute to Dr. Syama Prasad Mookerjee on his 125th birth anniversary, describing him as a timeless example of courage, nationalism and selfless service. In an article, the Prime Minister said Dr. Mookerjee’s public life was defined by his unwavering commitment to the indivisibility of India.
He said Dr. Mookerjee stood firm during Partition to ensure that West Bengal remained an integral part of the country and later dedicated himself to the cause of Jammu and Kashmir. The Prime Minister said the revocation of Articles 370 and 35(A) in 2019 was the most fitting tribute to his martyrdom.
Highlighting Dr. Mookerjee’s contributions, the Prime Minister said he became the youngest Vice-Chancellor of the University of Calcutta and introduced several reforms to strengthen education, research and student welfare. The Prime Minister also noted Dr. Mookerjee’s role as Independent India’s first Minister for Industry and Supply, saying he laid the foundation of modern industrial India through initiatives such as the Damodar Valley Corporation and the Sindri Fertiliser Plant, while supporting handlooms, cottage industries and artisans. The Prime Minister also recalled Dr. Mookerjee’s humanitarian work during the Bengal famine of 1943, when he helped establish relief centres and community kitchens for those affected.
