Prime Minister Narendra Modi today called for a stronger India-Indonesia strategic partnership, saying it will contribute not only to the prosperity of the two nations but also to regional and global peace and stability. Addressing the Indonesian Parliament in Jakarta, Mr Modi said the relationship between India and Indonesia is centuries-old and shares similar democratic values, mutual trust and a common vision for the future.
The Prime Minister said India believes in development, peace, stability and prosperity. Mr Modi stressed the need for collective action against terrorism and unilateral actions that undermine regional security. He emphasised global south stability besides the Indo-Pacific.
The Prime Minister called for deeper cooperation in defence, maritime security, trade, digital technology, education, artificial intelligence and critical minerals. He also stressed expanding cooperation in digital public infrastructure, including UPI, artificial intelligence, education, startups and innovation to benefit people in both countries. Highlighting the age-old cultural bonds between the two countries, the Prime Minister said the shared heritage stretches from the Ramayana to Borobudur, reflecting the strong civilisational connection between India and Indonesia.
Emphasising the importance of strategic trust, the Prime Minister advocated closer collaboration in cybersecurity, emergency preparedness and maritime cooperation, spanning from Great Nicobar to the Strait of Malacca. He also underlined the need to strengthen people-to-people ties and said initiatives such as the Ganga Mahakumbh embody India’s cultural ethos and offer opportunities to further deepen bilateral engagement.
Describing the current phase of relations as the beginning of a new chapter in India-Indonesia ties, Mr Modi expressed confidence that the expanding partnership will serve as a force for peace, progress and shared prosperity across the Indo-Pacific.
While addressing the diaspora at Jakarta, Prime Minister Modi said initiatives such as affordable insurance schemes available for as little as rupees 20 a month have revolutionised financial inclusion, while Direct Benefit Transfer, UPI and the rapid expansion of expressways have transformed India’s economy and improved the lives of millions. The Prime Minister also reiterated the deep-rooted civilisational and democratic ties between India and Indonesia, describing the relationship as one built on shared values, mutual respect and a common vision for the future.
Earlier, Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto addressed the gathering and spoke warmly about the historical links between the two countries. He said Indonesians have Indian DNA, reflecting the centuries-old cultural and civilisational connections between the two nations. Expressing deep admiration for Prime Minister Modi’s leadership, President Subianto said he intends to draw inspiration from India’s development journey and economic success to accelerate Indonesia’s own growth.
