In Peru, five people were killed and more than 20 others injured after an earthquake of 5.5 magnitude struck the Andes region. Local authorities said around 300 people have been displaced so far. According to the US Geological Survey (USGS), the earthquake struck this morning as per Indian time, with its epicentre located two kilometres west-southwest of Sicaya City in Huancayo province, at a depth of 10 kilometres. Peru’s National Civil Defence Institute said the number of missing people is still unknown. Several buildings collapsed or suffered structural damage, including the local church and convent. Peru frequently experiences earthquakes as the country is located in the so-called Pacific Ring of Fire. In 2007, a powerful earthquake of 7.9 magnitude struck the Pisco province in the Ica region, killing nearly 600 people.
