Parliament adjourned till 2 PM as Opposition protests alleged police action on NEET protestors

Both the Houses of Parliament have been adjourned till 2:00 PM following opposition uproar over alleged police action during students’ protest over NEET issue.

When the Lok Sabha began its proceedings at 11 AM, Speaker Om Birla congratulated Para-athlete Sharmila Dhankar on winning gold medal at the 23rd Commonwealth Games. Mr Birla also congratulated Sarvesh Kushare, Valluri Ajaya Babu and Gyaneshwari Yadav for winning silver medals, and Shilpa Shyla and Bindyarani Devi for clinching bronze medals. He also applauded Anahat Singh on winning World Junior Squash Championship 2026 in Canada. The Speaker also congratulated all the athletes who have brought honour and pride to the country, as well as to the coaches and their family members.

Later, when Mr Birla tried to take up Question Hour, the Opposition members started sloganeering over the alleged police action against the students during the protest.

The Speaker said the House should function smoothly, engage in meaningful dialogue and deliberate on the Public Examinations (Prevention of Unfair Means) Amendment Bill, 2026. Mr Birla urged the government and the opposition to build a consensus and begin discussion on the bill. He said, no matter how significant the issue may be, there should be no disruption during Question Hour. The Speaker said that Parliament is a place for discussion and dialogue and a positive message should go across the country.

As the uproar continued, the Speaker adjourned the House till 2:00 PM.

The Rajya Sabha also adjourned till 2:00 PM over the same issue. When the House assembled at 11 AM, Several Union Ministers laid the paper on the table of the House. The report of the Department-related Parliamentary Standing Committee on Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution was also presented.

When Chairman C P Radhakrishnan took up Zero Hour, the members of the opposition started sloganeering over alleged police action during students’ protests over the NEET issue. As the pandemonium continued, the Chairman adjourned the House till 2:00 PM.
