Over 50 lakh households benefit under PM-Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana: Pralhad Joshi

The government has informed that over 50 lakh households have benefited under the Pradhan Mantri Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana (PM-SGMBY) since its launch in February 2024. In a written reply to a question in the Lok Sabha today, Union Minister of New and Renewable Energy Pralhad Joshi said that a subsidy worth over 28,000 crore rupees has been released so far as Central Financial Assistance across the country under the scheme.

The Minister said it is a demand-driven scheme wherein all residential consumers in the country having a grid-connected electricity connection with the local DISCOM can avail themselves of the benefits of the scheme for the installation of rooftop solar systems. The Minister also added that the budget of the scheme has been raised from 17,000 crore rupees in 2025-26 to 22,000 crore rupees in 2026-27. Mr Joshi also informed that under the PM-SGMBY, solar power generation capacity of over 14.65 gigawatts has been added till July this year, contributing to the non-fossil fuel capacity target of 500 GW by 2030.
