More than 2,000 yoga enthusiasts from the Indian community and other expatriate groups came together in Doha to celebrate the International Day of Yoga, underscoring the growing popularity of the ancient practice in Qatar.
The event was organised by the Embassy of India in Qatar, in collaboration with the Indian Sports Centre, Indian Cultural Centre, Indian Community Benevolent Forum, and the Indian Business and Professionals Council Qatar. The celebration was held at the UDST Cricket Ground in Doha and was themed “Yoga for Healthy Ageing,” in line with this year’s global observance.
India’s Ambassador to Qatar, Vipul, attended the event as chief guest. Diplomats, Qatari dignitaries, community leaders, and participants from various nationalities joined the programme.
Addressing the gathering, the ambassador noted that the International Day of Yoga has been observed worldwide since the United Nations adopted a resolution establishing the day in 2014 with the support of 177 member states. He also highlighted Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s message that yoga serves as a lifelong companion, supporting physical health, mental well-being and inner balance while helping people age gracefully and remain active members of society.
The programme featured a mass yoga demonstration and expert-led sessions focused on physical fitness, mental wellness and holistic health. Exhibition areas showcasing Ayurveda, health and wellness initiatives, and emerging artificial intelligence applications in yoga also drew strong interest from participants.
Organisers said the event successfully promoted the values of health, harmony and unity through the practice of yoga, while reinforcing the message of healthy living across communities.
