The deep depression over the Bay of Bengal has crossed the north Andhra Pradesh-south Odisha coast near Kalingapatnam and is now moving further inland. The system is continuing to trigger heavy to extremely heavy rainfall over several parts of Odisha, particularly the southern districts. India Meteorological Department has warned of further heavy rain, strong winds, waterlogging and landslides as the system moves inland.

 

In Odisha, incessant rain has disrupted normal life in several districts, with reports of waterlogging, landslides and disruption of road connectivity in vulnerable areas. The deep depression crossed the coast near Kalingapatnam late last night with winds of about 50 to 60 kilometres per hour, gusting up to 70 kilometres per hour, and is moving inland while gradually weakening.

 

The IMD has retained red warnings for extremely heavy rainfall in parts of southern Odisha, with orange warnings for several other districts. The State Government has deployed 33 Odisha Disaster Rapid Action Force teams, with rescue equipment and shelters kept ready. Schools and Anganwadi centres remain closed in several vulnerable districts, while leave of government employees has been cancelled in affected areas.
