The National Statistics Office (NSO) of the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation has conducted the first-ever all-India survey on household travel. The survey covered 14 thousand 274 villages and 10,377 urban blocks and collected information from around four lakh 92 thousand households, covering over 20 lakh 34 thousand persons.
According to National Household Travel Survey which was conducted during July, 2025 to June this year, two-wheelers are the predominant mode of transport for commuting to fixed workplaces, accounting for 42.6 per cent of workers. The average monthly expenditure on commuting to a fixed workplace is 785 rupees per worker, while the Urban workers incur a substantially higher average monthly cost of one thousand and 44 rupees, compared with 612 rupees for rural workers.
It added that buses and railways facilitate 73.5 percent of overnight travel followed by cars at 15.1 percent and two wheelers at 8.8 percent. The Ministry said that the primary objective of the survey is to generate robust, data-driven insights into domestic travel patterns and dynamics to support regional transport planning, infrastructure development and evidence-based policy formulation.
