NMC issues new advisory on digital signatures for authentication of medical records

The National Medical Commission has issued an advisory on the use of digital and electronic signatures for the remote review and authentication of medical records. The move aims to ensure uniform practices, protect patient safety and promote the responsible use of digital healthcare technologies.

In a public notice issued yesterday, the NMC said differing practices among healthcare establishments had created uncertainty over remote authentication of medical records. The commission also cited a recommendation by the High-Level Committee on Non-Financial Regulatory Reforms to facilitate digital and electronic signatures in medical practice in accordance with the Information Technology Act, 2000.

The NMC said the advisory seeks to remove ambiguity, maintain professional accountability and improve access to healthcare by reducing avoidable regulatory hurdles. It has advised all registered medical practitioners and other concerned stakeholders to comply with the advisory.
