Nigeria: At least 94 killed, 50 injured in fuel tanker explosion

At least 94 people were killed and 50 injured after a fuel tanker exploded in Nigeria. The incident occurred in northern Jigawa state last night. Local media reported that many of the victims had approached the crashed tanker and were attempting to collect fuel spilt on the road.

The fuel tanker was coming from Kano and heading to Nguru in Yobe state when the driver lost control of the vehicle.

The driver has been taken into custody while the police conduct an investigation.

Such incidents are relatively common in Nigeria, where fuel prices are extremely high compared to average incomes, particularly in poor rural areas.

Earlier in September, 59 people died in Niger state after a fuel tanker collided with a lorry carrying passengers and cattle.
