The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has issued a notice to West Bengal Chief Secretary over the reported death of at least sixty newborns this month at Malda Medical College and Hospital in West Bengal.

 

Taking a Suo Motu cognizance of a media report the commission has sought a detailed report on the matter within two weeks. 

 

The Commission has observed that if the contents of the news report are true it raises serious issues of violation of human rights. According to the media report, 44 out of the 60 newborns were referred from other medical facilities after their health deteriorated.
