The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has taken suo motu cognisance of a media report alleging that borewell water in the Dattanagar locality, near the Ambad Industrial Area in Nashik district of Maharashtra, has been contaminated due to the seepage of chemical-laden effluents. According to the report, residents have been receiving contaminated water for the past two months. The contamination is allegedly caused by industrial effluents discharged from factories in the adjoining industrial area. The NHRC has issued a notice to the Maharashtra Chief Secretary, seeking a detailed report on the matter within two weeks. It has also sought comments from the Maharashtra State Pollution Control Board. The Commission said that, if true, the allegations raise serious concerns regarding human rights violations.
