The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has issued a notice to the Chief Secretary of Maharashtra over the reported death of three newborns and injuries to four others due to a fire incident at the Sick Newborn Care Unit of the District Women’s Hospital at Amravati, Maharashtra. Taking suo motu cognizance of a media report, the Commission has sought a detailed report in the matter within two weeks. The Commission has observed that if the contents of the news report are true, then it raises a serious issue of violation of human rights. According to the media report, the incident took place on 25th of this month.
