The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has taken suo motu cognizance of a media report that a 19-year-old woman committed suicide after being gang-raped by six people, including three minors. The Commission has issued notices to the Senior Superintendent of Police and the District Magistrate, Jhansi, Uttar Pradesh, calling for a detailed report on the matter within two weeks. The report is expected to include the status of the investigation and compensation, if any, paid to the next of kin of the deceased.

The Commission has observed that the contents of the media report, if true, raise serious issues of violation of human rights. According to the report, the victim was distressed by the threats to circulate the video and consumed poison.
