Railways Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw has said that the Railways is undertaking systematic work to increase capacity, improve signalling and introduce new-generation suburban trains with automatic doors facility. He said, work is underway in Mumbai on railway projects worth 18 thousand crore rupees. He was addressing the flagging off ceremony of Mumbai (CSMT) to Sindhudurg (Sawantwadi Road) Express Train through video conferencing from New Delhi today.
The minister said the eastern and western Dedicated Freight Corridors will significantly strengthen Maharashtra’s industrial development by facilitating the movement of goods from Jawaharlal Nehru Port to other parts of the country. He said, around three thousand 200 local train services are currently operated in the city and increasing the number of services by about 10 per cent will improve passenger movement. The Minister said the Railway Board had ordered the Integral Coach Factory Chennai to manufacture 28 AC local trains, with the first train expected to enter production next year. Mr Vaishnaw said, the new generation local trains will bring a major transformation to Mumbai’s suburban railway system.
