NCW recommends establishing a Commission for Prisons with special focus on women

The National Commission for Women has recommended Central government to establish a National Commission for Prisons to monitor prison administration and ensure accountability in custodial institutions across India, with special focus on women. The commission has submitted its recommendatory report for Law Review 2025-26 on laws relating to women in prison, proposing comprehensive reforms to create a gender-responsive, human and rights-based correctional system across the country. The report has been forwarded to the Ministry of Home Affairs and the Ministry of Women and Child Development for consideration and necessary action. The key recommendations of the report are the appointment of permanently posted medical officers, special healthcare facilities for women prisoners, the establishment of trauma-informed care systems and mandatory institutional deliveries in external hospitals.
