National Green Hydrogen Mission aims to position India as global green hydrogen hub

The Ministry of New and Renewable Energy is implementing the National Green Hydrogen Mission, with an aim to build a strong domestic green hydrogen ecosystem and position India as a potential global hub for its production, use and export. The Mission was approved by the Union Cabinet in January 2023 with an initial outlay of 19,744 crore rupees for the period up to 2029-30.

The NTPC Green Hydrogen Mobility Station, which has been established at Greater Noida in Uttar Pradesh, is a landmark initiative demonstrating the potential of green hydrogen as a clean, efficient and sustainable fuel for India’s transportation sector. The integrated facility brings together hydrogen production, compression, high-pressure storage and vehicle refuelling.

Talking to Akashvani News, Executive Director, NTPC- Renewable Energy DMR Panda said that currently five hydrogen powered buses are being filled with hydrogen fuel and each bus can ply up to 720 kilometer distance on a single fill. He said no ground water is used for the production of hydrogen and only treated Sewage Treatment Plant water is being used for it. Mr Panda expressed hope that in the future, hydrogen fuel will be cheaper than the cost of diesel and petrol.

The NTPC Green Hydrogen Mobility Station is designed to support hydrogen-powered heavy vehicles and passenger vehicles, creating an integrated hydrogen mobility ecosystem. It contributes to India’s journey towards a clean, secure and sustainable transportation ecosystem and supports the emergence of hydrogen as an important fuel for the country’s mobility transition.
