The nation is celebrating the 119th birth anniversary of revolutionary Shaheed-e-Azam Bhagat Singh today. On this day in 1907, Bhagat Singh was born in Banga village in Lyallpur district of Punjab, now in Pakistan.

Bhagat Singh was born into a family of revolutionaries and was the second among seven siblings. He was lovingly called ‘Bhaganwala’, meaning the lucky one. He proved his name by sacrificing himself for the freedom of the country along with Rajguru and Sukhdev.

A state-level programme, entitled ‘Jashn-e-Inquilab’, has been scheduled at Punjab Agricultural University in Ludhiana to celebrate his birth anniversary through cultural events. People are also visiting his native village Khatkar Kalan in Shaheed Bhagat Singh Nagar to pay their respects to the great son of the soil.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has paid tributes to freedom fighter Shaheed Bhagat Singh on his birth anniversary. In a social media post, PM Modi said that with indomitable courage and valour, Bhagat Singh infused new energy into the freedom movement.

The Prime Minister said that Bhagat Singh’s spirit of sacrificing everything for the honour of the nation is a symbol of the courage and resolve of India’s youth. PM Modi also shared a video paying tribute to Bhagat Singh.
