In Japan, Nagasaki today marks the 81st anniversary of the US atomic bombing. On the occasion, Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi reiterated her policy of taking a realistic and pragmatic approach toward achieving a world without nuclear weapons.
Talking to reporters, she said Japan’s policy is to work within the Nuclear Nonproliferation Treaty. On the occasion, representatives from more than 90 countries attended the ceremony at the Peace Park, Nagasaki and observed a moment of silence at 11:02 a.m.
On 9th August, 1945 United States had dropped on Nagasaki a plutonium device called “Fat Man,” killing an estimated 74,000 people by the end of the year and leading directly to Japan’s unconditional surrender.
