One Assam Rifles personnel was killed and four others were injured in a suspected improvised explosive device, IED, blast at Khopanala, near Shukhovi in Chümoukedima district today. Director General of Police Rupin Sharma confirmed this to Akashvani News Kohima. Mr Sharma said, the blast is suspected to have originated from an auto-rickshaw.
However, he added that authorities have launched an investigation into the incident and further details are awaited.
No civilian injuries have been reported. According to sources, the Assam Rifles convoy was on its way to Dimapur when the explosion occurred around 2:00 PM this afternoon.
The injured personnel have been admitted to the Christian Institute of Health Sciences and Research in Dimapur for medical treatment.
Meanwhile, Nagaland Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio has strongly condemned the attack, describing it as a cowardly act with no place in society.
In a social media post, Mr Rio expressed his condolences and prayers to those affected.
The Chief Minister said the perpetrators would be identified and brought to justice, and affirmed that such acts would not be allowed to threaten the peace and security of the people.
