Madhya Pradesh celebrated World Environment Day today with a series of programmes across the state. Chief Minister Dr. Mohan Yadav launched the ‘Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam 2.0’ campaign at a state-level function held at Kushabhau Thakre International Convention Centre in Bhopal. The Chief Minister released five course modules on Circular Economy and documentation of 500 stepwells from 16 districts, prepared under the Jal Ganga Samvardhan Abhiyan by EPCO and INTACH. Eleven state-level environment awards were also presented in eight categories to institutions, industries, social organisations and individuals for their outstanding contributions in environment protection, pollution control and sustainable development.
Speaking on the occasion, Chief Minister Dr. Yadav said that the state government is committed to putting the Union Carbide site in Bhopal to good use, along with developing a memorial there. He added that the toxic waste of the Union Carbide plant has been disposed of in accordance with the Supreme Court’s directions, which reflects the government’s commitment towards environment protection.
Meanwhile, a tree plantation drive was organised at Lokbhawan under the directions of Governor Mangubhai Patel. Twenty-two saplings of ornamental, fragrant, fruit-bearing and shade trees were planted in the premises. Chief Secretary Anurag Jain also planted a neem tree at the Mantralaya premises under the ‘Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam’ campaign and urged officials and employees to plant more trees to protect the environment.
