Mizoram has incurred damages and economic losses of more than 1,291 crore rupees from natural disasters and disease outbreaks over the past five years, between 2021 and 2025, according to a Post Disaster Needs Assessment (PDNA) report.
The report, reviewed at a State Disaster Management Authority (SDMA) meeting chaired by Chief Minister Lalduhoma yesterday, said natural disasters and disease outbreaks such as African Swine Fever (ASF) and rodent attacks caused damages worth 656.76 crore rupees and economic losses amounting to 634.35 crore rupees, official sources said.
The PDNA report identified Cyclone Remal, African Swine Fever, landslides triggered by heavy rainfall, and rodent infestations in parts of the state as the major calamities affecting Mizoram during the period.
To address the impact, the report estimated that 879.82 crore rupees would be required for recovery and reconstruction efforts across affected sectors.
The SDMA also reviewed the draft Mizoram State Disaster Management Plan 2026 and disaster management plans prepared by all 11 districts, aimed at enhancing the state’s preparedness and response capacity.
Discussions further centred on strengthening Project Management Units (PMUs) established under key national mitigation programmes, including the National Landslide Risk Mitigation Project, National Earthquake Risk Mitigation Project, and the Forest Fire Risk Management Scheme, to ensure effective implementation of disaster risk reduction measures.
Among other decisions, the meeting reviewed the continued implementation of the Emergency Response Support System (ERSS) and approved the selection of 178 projects under the Recovery and Reconstruction Fund for 2024-25 at an estimated cost of 11.44 crore rupees.
It also discussed the procurement of additional search and rescue equipment and the proposal to declare ASF a state-specific disaster to facilitate SDRF assistance without a fixed timeframe.
