Mizoram launches ‘Khet Bachao Abhiyan’ to promote sustainable farming practices

Mizoram has launched ‘Khet Bachao Abhiyan’, an initiative of the Union Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers’ Welfare, to curb soil degradation and promote sustainable farming practices. The campaign was launched at Lok Bhavan by Governor Vijay Kumar Singh, who stressed balanced, soil test-based fertiliser use and natural farming methods. He expressed concern over excessive use of chemical fertilisers and pesticides, saying it has harmed agricultural land and human health. He called for soil conservation, regular soil testing, and a gradual shift towards natural agriculture under the Prime Minister’s national mission.

Officials said the month-long campaign will include seminars, demonstrations and training by scientists, KVKs and state departments to reduce chemical fertiliser use, promote green manuring, bio-fertilisers and organic farming, and improve farmer incomes and soil health. The initiative will also strengthen Krishi Vigyan Kendras’ role in farmer awareness and support sustainable agriculture in Mizoram’s hill-based jhum cultivation areas across state.
