In Mizoram, at least 26 workers reportedly lost their lives while three were injured as an under-construction railway bridge over the Kurung River in Mizoram collapsed. As per reports, the bridge connecting Bairabi to Sairang collapsed in the Sairang area this morning.
Sources said that the bodies of 18 victims have been recovered so far while eight bodies are yet to be recovered.
The District Administration and Mizoram Police along with the Quick Response Team (QTR) and National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) are working in full swing to retrieve the dead bodies.
Meanwhile, Vice-President Jagdeep Dhankhar has expressed grief over the loss of lives due to the collapse of a bridge in Mizoram.
In a social media post, Mr. Dhankhar said, the loss of lives due to the bridge collapse in Mizoram is deeply saddening. He said, his thoughts go out to the victims, the injured, and their families. He prayed for the safety of the people for whom rescue operations are underway.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi also expressed his condolences over the mishap. He said, condolences to those who have lost their loved ones. May the injured recover soon, added the Prime Minister.
The Prime Minister announced an ex-gratia of two lakh rupees from the PMNRF to the next of kin of each deceased and 50 thousand rupees to the injured.
A rescue operation is still underway.
