Metro network now spans 26 cities, up from five in 2014: PM Modi

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has said that in 2014, India had just 248 kilometres of Metro lines across five cities. Today, the country has nearly 1,200 kilometres of Metro networks across 26 cities.

In a social media post today, PM Modi highlighted that more than one crore people travel by Metro every day in the country, adding that the impact goes beyond statistics and numbers. He said it means less time spent in traffic, more time with family, greater productivity and better opportunities.

The Prime Minister said this is the transformation his Government is working towards for urban India. He asked how long cities such as Pune would have had to wait for a Metro if the network had continued expanding at the pace it did before 2014. Mr Modi said it would not have taken years, but decades, which was unacceptable.
